The Castle of the “Conte Guidi”, Vinci, is a typical Tuscany's medieval fortress dating from the eleventh century, whose walls, following the trend of land, gives a characteristic oval appearance, within which stands the fortress of the Counts Guidi, creating a profile similar to that of a sailing ship. For this reason, according to tradition, the Castello dei Conti Guidi is also called “Castello della Nave” (Vessel Castle)
The residential complex is characterized by narrow streets, typical houses and arcades of the medieval, in the center of which stands the fortress, once the residence of the mayor. Since 1953, there is inside the Leonardo Museum and is also kept badges and frescoes of the Tuscan aristocracy who had served as mayor. There is also a beautiful glazed ceramic depicting the Madonna and Child" dating back to 1523 and attributed to Giovanni della Robbia. Within the perimeter of the walls of the castle, there is the Church of Santa Croce with the baptismal font where it is believed that Leonardo da Vinci was baptized; there is also the Leonardo Library displaying reproductions of Leonardo's manuscripts and drawings in addition to all the printed editions of his works.
The Castle of Capraia is found in a natural defense, is located on a hill overlooking the Arno River, in medieval times, from here could be controlled a large part of the territory of Tuscany, and above all the river traffic between Florence and Pisa. Given the strategic location on the main roads of Tuscany, was repeatedly torn between Pistoia and Florence, and for this reason the Florentines raised on the opposite river bank the “Castle of Montelupo”. Although the first settlements go back to the Etruscans, there are very few remains of the fortification. Currently you can see the ancient walls that date back to 1000 and which today are part of some modern buildings, however, the structure of the village is still the Middle Ages with its narrow streets running up and down between the houses on the hill of Capraia.
